Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
Demon Copperhead is a coming of age novel set in modern-day Kentucky. Barbara Kingsolver uses the David Copperfield novel as the framework for the storytelling, but it is set in the poorest District in the USA in the midst of unemployment and widespread opioid addiction. Damon is orphaned , unwanted, and neglected. He suffers a series of setbacks, including addiction. He yearns for a family, finds and loses love, struggles with school, work, and has no plan for the future. With some support he pulls himself upn and decides who he will be and how he will become that person. The story, like Dickens novels, is sentimental, cause-oriented, and poignant, but it always works. We follow Demon’s story and feel privileged to have known him. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Highly recommended. 4.9 out of 5.0 stars
“The wonder is that you could start life with nothing, end with nothing, and lose so much in between.”
