Red Lake Rec Site

Ramble On Posted on 2026-08-22 by D. Smith2026-08-15

On a warm day with no smoke, I drove up the Tranquille – Criss Creek Road 36 km to Red Lake.     the usual boat launch is from the east side, but there is a newer Recreation Site at the north end.    From the junction to Red Lake, continue up the Criss Creek Road for 2 km, then turn left onto the Seven Lakes Road.    At about 1.5 km turn onto the Leblonde Road.    A short distance further, the road splits and the left fork goes to the Rec Site.

There are 14 campsites with tables and pit toilets nearby.  A gravel road goes down to a boat launch, but the lake levels were low, and the launch area was very shallow.   My kayak was fine, but any larger boat may not work out late in the summer.

Red Lake

I paddled a 5 km loop on the west end of the lake, with one stop onto a small islet.   There were no other boats on that end of the lake, but I paddled down through the narrows to see down the lake and there were fishermen on the south end of the lake.

Red Lake

At the northwest corner of the lake is the Red Lake Dam.    Sparks Creek flows out of the lake to Sparks Lake.    Sparks Creek flows into Criss Creek and it continues down through the hills to Deadman River.   In 2021 a wildfire started at Sparks Lake when an old vehicle caught fire next to a marijuana grow-op.    It became the largest fire in the province, burning almost 90 000 ha of land.    When I hike to Skoatl Point 40 km away, the black forest there is the northeast end of the Sparks Lake Fire.

I kept the distance shorter since there were red algae bands (Cyanobacteria) in some parts of the lake.   After paddling I walked through the campground and along some nearby tracks.    I plan to return to this Rec Site again to paddle the lake again and then explore other backcountry tracks in the next year.

Mud Lake Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-08-16 by D. Smith2026-08-16

Mud Lake is a small marshy lake in the hills between McQueen Lake and Opax Mountain.   The tracks that lead to Mud Lake and around the lake are restricted to non-motorized use and somewhat grown-over.     I had been in to Mud Lake a number of times and I had explored several of the tracks branching off, but I had never worked out a loop route … Continue reading →

Outer Inks Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-08-13 by D. Smith2026-08-06

The trails in the Outer Inks area are accessed off the Inks Lakes Interchange on the Coquihalla Highway.    there are many backroads, secondary roads and single tracks, mostly used by motorcycles.    ATVs and 4WDs sometimes use the doubletracks, linking to routes on Chuwhels Mountain.    Some mountain bikers and hikers also use the trails.    With many possible routes, most of the hiking routes … Continue reading →

Six Mile Lakes

Ramble On Posted on 2026-08-09 by D. Smith2026-08-09

In the heat of summer and weeks of smoky conditions, finding a reasonable hiking route became a daily review of forecasts.    By using weather apps like Environment Canada’s and another government app – FireSmoke.ca, I have been able to determine where the least smoke would be at any given time.    For this day, the smoke-free area was near Savona for a few hours.    … Continue reading →

Mt. Embleton Trails

Ramble On Posted on 2026-08-06 by D. Smith2026-07-30

The Mt. Embleton Trail system started as a combination of old logging roads and tracks that went around grazing fences.     A local Heffley Creek resident, Tony Embleton worked to make the trails into a recreational opportunity and over the years, a 9.5 km network of recreational trails was established with parking and signage, now part of BC Rec Sites and Trails.   Many users park at … Continue reading →

Surrey and Sussex Lakes

Surrey

The Surrey Lake Forest Service Road starts as a turn off the Meadow Creek Road (between Lac le Jeune and Logan Lake).    It is a gravel road bearing south, climbing up through the forest.     After 7 km it passes under the Coquihalla Highway.     It provides access to several lakes in the area – Surrey Lake, Frogmoore Lake, and Sussex Lake.   The Surrey Lake … Continue reading →

Exploring Badger, Spooney, and Little Badger Lakes

Ramble On Posted on 2026-07-31 by D. Smith2026-07-31

On a summer day I drove on backroads to Badger Lake.    I launched my kayak, then explored narrow marsh channels to get to Spooney Lake, then did a loop route to do much of Badger Lake.    After paddling, I secured the boat, then hiked secondary backroads to Little Badger Lake, a quiet and remote spot in the hills. Badger Lake is one of the … Continue reading →

Uplands Ridge Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-07-28 by D. Smith2026-07-19

On a sunny July morning, time was limited so I chose to hike a known route which started at the end of the McLeod and Uplands Rd. trailhead.    A number of single track trails wind over the grasslands benches, all great for spring and fall hiking.     There are also some trails that climb into the hills, used by hikers and mountain bikers.    Some … Continue reading →

Tod Mountain Peak

Ramble On Posted on 2026-07-25 by D. Smith2026-07-16

On a hot summer day in mid-July we took the chairlift from the Sun Peaks Resort up to mid-mountain, then we hiked a longer loop route to the top of the mountain and then back on trails through the West Bowl.   There was a bit of haze in the area, but it was mostly sunny and the wind was helpful with any mosquitoes or flies.   The … Continue reading →

Rossmoore Lake Kayak and Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-07-22 by D. Smith2026-07-16

On a hot day in July, I ventured out on the Long Lake Road, then continued on the bumpy Rossmoore Lake FSR for 16.5 km to Rossmoore Lake.   There is a small Rec Site on the lake, with a steep and rough boat launch.   On this day, I kayaked around the lake once, then hiked tracks and trails on the east side of the lake, visiting … Continue reading →
