Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie
Before They Are Hanged is the second book in the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. It carries on the story from where the first book left off. In my review of The First Law, I praised the book for being very readable, but also full of great characterization, dark humor, and clever dialogue. I suggested the plot was minimal and wondered if that would change in book two. I am pleased to report that this book is even better than the first and the plot develops well, switching back and forth to the events surrounding the main characters in different areas on separate journeys. There is a war in the north, a war in the south, a conflict of succession, and a quest to find an old item that may help in battling the dark forces. The main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar, Bayaz, Dogman, Three Trees, Collem West, and a host of secondary characters – are lively players in a rich world of war, intrigue, survival, politics, friendship, and a touch of magic.
This book is a sparkling read and is enthusiastically recommended – 4.7 out of 5.0 stars
“We must forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged.” (Heinrich Heine)
