Batchelor Hills Loop
I hiked trails through the Batchelor Hills in mid and late November, exploring loop routes that combined old tracks and ORV routes. The motorized community does not use the trails after the snows fall, but we can choose trails that provide scenic views and grasslands access. I was particularly interested in starting from the Lac du Bois Road to get to the area to the northeast of Red Hill, the Long Lake corridor, and the North Batchelor Hills. Over three days of hiking I found pleasing loop routes and identified more routes for the future.
Although snow had fallen, it disappeared quickly in the lower grasslands on mild days. It was darker, more snowy on colder on Opax Mountain to the northwest.
There was a bit of snow on the north side of hills in the Batchelor Range and more snow on Strawberry Hill across the North Thompson River Valley.
My route took me to a spot by the McQueen Creek Road which continues north through the middle grasslands. I will be back that way to hike to the into the North Batchelor Range, shown here in shadow.
The Batchelor Range is a series of hills and each one offers new views. I was on top of this hill twice this year.
It was all very quiet in the lower grasslands with no motorized vehicles and no one else around. A recommended route for the shoulder season.
