Hiking the East Rim Loop
On a grey late November day we hiked into Peterson Creek Park from the Mariposa Trailhead.
We continued up the canyon, then descended down to cross the creek.
We followed trails that stayed close to the canyon rim on the east side.
There are a number of trails on the east side, but we prefer the ones that stay close to the canyon, one of which leads down to a viewpoint of Bridalveil Falls.
We wound our way back down to the creek, crossed a bridge and then wound our way up the steep slopes to the benchland.
We returned up the Willow Trail to the start, completing a loop. This is a favorite loop, one we choose to do several times a year. We will be back in the winter (with microspikes).
I’m curious about the app/program thats shows your track. I use gaia, but this looks interesting. Want to get back to some map and compass outings after many years strictly with garmins. Any ideas on good maps for compass/map outings would be appreciated. Keep trrekking Doug!
I record the track with a Garmin watch. I use Garmin Express to wirelessly import the track. I then export a GPX track and open it in one of several possible programs. I use Topofusion a lot since it allows me to edit the track if I need to. I also use Caltopo and Google Earth. In TopoFusion, i have a choice of online maps, but my goto is OpenTopoMap. I export the map as a jpg and then edit it with image editing software, mostly like Paint Shop Pro or Photo Director. I have a routine that is fairly quick so I can produce a nice map in about 5 minutes.
