Hiking the East Rim Loop
On a grey cool day in mid-March, the East Rim Loop (Peterson Creek) was the route of choice. Starting on the Mariposa Trail, all route choices were along the canyon rim, first on the west side, then on the east side. There is a good set of trails down to the bottom of the canyon to cross the creek, but for this day a lesser known crossing required a moderate scramble.
The creek had not yet filled with spring runoff, making the crossing easy.
Single track trails wind along the steep slopes above the canyon on the east side.
The northern half of the Rim Trail has many open spots with fine views across and into the canyon.
The route dropped down to a viewpoint of Bridalveil Falls.
Once the trails reach the canyon bottom, there is steep climb up the slopes to the benchland on the west side. This is a 80 minute hike with some good hills to challenge fitness, but the loop features great views of the rugged terrain of Peterson Creek Park.
