Hiking the Lower Rose Ridges
The benchlands below Rose Hill and the west end of Juniper Ridge have long sloped ridges cut by gullies. The lands were once under Glacial Lake Kamloops. The ridges are consolidated silts, soft and prone to erosion. Sinkholes dot the landscape. There are some recent access roads for the upgraded powerlines that traverse the area. Access from above follows these tracks and there are some bike trails from either Rose Hill Road or from Juniper. There are several points of access from below from Valleyview roads, or from Rose Hill Road (my preferred start point).
There are numerous old double tracks, new access tracks, and single tracks used by mountain bikers. Generally speaking we follow one of the tracks up one ridge, then across single tracks at the top end of the gullies, and come down a different ridge. There is a good double track back along the north end of the area, although it has to go down and back up through a large gully.
The open ridges are sagebrush-rabbitbrush grasslands with very few trees. There are ponderosa pines and douglas firs in the gullies and along the north-facing slopes.
A few old snags still stand in low spots and sinkholes.
Sometimes the area is described as Valleyview Silt Cliffs, which are the features that overlook the many gullies of the area. The gullies are eroded by seasonal runoff. This area would be very unsuitable for building, so it may stay available for hikers, runners, dog walkers, and mountain bikers for some time.
Not many people know the area well, except for locals even though we drive right by it. It takes a few outings to establish a known route. I have been hiking the trails now for 44 years and hope to for a few more yet.
