Hot Stakes
When the weather gets hot, we adjust our activities accordingly:
- an early start
- a higher elevation location
- no long hill climbs
- routes with some shade
- varied activities
On a day that was forecast for 42ºC (107º F), I drove to Stake Lake. I was first on the lake, paddling around the lake twice, which took about an hour. I paddled the shoreline to take advantage of shaded sections on the east and south ends. It was already quite hot by mid-morning.
After paddling, I hauled the boat back onto the truck, tied it up, and secured it. I put away the paddling gear and put on hiking shoes, then went for hike on a moderate and shady trail.
After an hour of hiking and 2.5 hours of activity, I was done for the day. I got back home to watch more of the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
By taking measures to get out, but avoid the hottest conditions, I had another great day in the outdoors. Some of the moments are shared in this YouTube video:
