Summer Hikes
As summer approaches, scheduling of hikes becomes more difficult. First of all, there are considerations of forest fires, smoke, road closures, mosquitoes, traffic, multiple users of trails and tracks (inc. dirt bikes, ATVs, and mountain bikes), parking areas filling up, heat, highway traffic, etc. For these we are best to avoid prime times, to do our homework (smoke location, highway problems, access road conditions, trail reports, etc.). We can pick a hike and a date, but any one of these can arise to foil plans. Second, our family responsibilities, holidays, and other events may change our personal schedules.
Nevertheless we can make tentative plans for outings. A few may be listed on the events schedule on the Kamloops Hiking Club website since they are closer to home and are reliable locations. Some are listed in the Hiking Tours widget and are likely, but will depend on conditions, usually predictable 5-6 days out. Others are tentative and a date can be chosen once the dust settles.
Some tentative hikes for the summer not yet listed include Raft Peak, Trophy Mountain Summit, Ridge Lakes and Ridge Mountain, Opax Mountain, Watching Creek, Dead Coyote – Three Amigos Loop, Chain Meadows, a Marble Range Peak, Kane Valley, Orchard Lake, McConnell Hill, Tod Mountain, Mt. Embleton, Skyline Trail (Manning), Rim Rocks, Estekwalan, Tuktakamin, Bearcat Caves, Tranquille Slot Canyon, Greenstone Mountain, Savona Mountain, and possibly others. Some will be hiked and some will wait to a following year.
As always, the date chosen will be one that I have open, and the hike may be solo, small group, or a regular group size.
