Long sections of the river beaches make good routes for hiking in the winter.    We hiked down the Rivers Trail on Schubert Drive, then hiked back on the beach at the river’s edge.   The ice was mostly gone by the end of the first week of March.

Walking on the sand can be hard on the legs and feet so we tried to find wetter areas or gravel sections.    Either way, we try to limit the total time walking on the sandy shores, but we enjoy a beach walk in late winter.

There are several routes we frequent – The Rivers Trail to the West Beaches, Overlander Beach past the Confluence and upstream, Mission Flats Park beaches, Cooney Bay, Westsyde Dunes, other shorter routes.
