Some Red Plateau Points of Interest
We hiked from the Red Plateau Forest Service Road over to Castle Butte on the Escarprment overlooking the Dewdrop Range. Along the way we spotted some interesting features, a few of which are shared here.
This large volcannic boulder stands at the trail’s edge. Since it is on top of the plateau nowhere near a hill and it is not an erratic, it is probably a projectile ejected from a volcanic eruption in the area. There are 3 known volcanic eruptions that formed Red Plateau. There is a collapsed volcanic vent to the northeast of the boulder.
On the ridge that forms Castle Butte is this volcanic feature we call Mushroom Rock.
Frrom the rim of the Escaprment we could see the top of the Dewdrop Arch, 1000 vertical feet below.
On the rocky ridges of the Escarpment we spotted a narrow canyon below.
Battle Bluff stands 4.25 km away, jutting out into Kamloops Lake. A seasonal dry pond with orange mineral salts flanks the road.
On the route to Castle Butte an outcrop with air pockets in the lava flow is right next to the Castle Butte bluff.
A short hike past the Castle Butte ridge on the edge of the big red cliffs is a natural arch that can be walked through.
This was only a small part of the Red Plateau area. There are more points of interest to explore. For example, we found a few frozen waterfalls last winter. Here are some of them:
There are more points of interest like a volcanic vent that is full of pumice, open ridges with Okanogan fameflower, air pocket caves on the Escarpment, more arches, narrow canyons, and other discoveries waiting for explorers.
