Squeeze Me by Carl Hiassen
Squeeze Me is a satirical novel set in South Florida. It is also a murder mystery with bouts of action and and it is full of humor and edgy dialogue. At times it is raucous and absurd. At other times it has scathing political satire. The characters are interesting and the story moves along well. There are a series of surprises along the way – an Everglades hidden enclave, snakes, wildlife captures, tanning bed mishaps, social scandals, inter-agency jurisdictional disputes, media misinformation, immigrant rumors, security breaches, thefts, and love affairs. It is entertaining, light in thematic content, but strong in social commentary. Above all, it is a lot of fun to read.
“Mockingbird sometimes found it hard to believe this was the same man she’d married; he looked like a different person now—as if someone had put a fire hose up his ass and inflated him with meringue.”
