I read Sea of Rust by C.H. Cargill. It seemed to be a popular book and without doing any background work, I started in. The premise was interesting, a dystopian novel about future AI ‘bots, mostly told by a specialized robot. I did enjoy the opening section, but I stopped enjoying the book about midway through the book.
Cliches started to ruin the book. This was sort of a Mad Max story with robots as the main characters, a story told mostly in the first person. Unfortunately, the language used was full of cliches, the dialogue even more so, and even the third person narration was in the same mode. Every paragraph used catch phrases, colloquial language fitting this time (not a future time), and instead of switching with each character (including the narrator), it all sounded out of synch.
Once I noticed how cliched it sounded, I started to watch for the plot elements and I soon realized this was kind of a B-Western. I had been looking forward to reading the book, but I just found it painful instead.
