The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V. Schwab
Some of the words used to describe this novel include “spellbinding, captivating, suspenseful, and romantic, ” and it is all of those, but it is also a tour de force, offering ample rewards, but also a level of discomfort for the reader, a dark reflection of our own choices in life. It is story about a curse, but Addie’s life in the cursed state prompts us to examine our own choices and priorities. The tale moves along quickly, even though it covers 300 years. Addie’s character is well-developed and the author allows her to grow. As readers we are left to imagine how the story can be successfully resolved and many possible ending are imagined, but the final section is a surprise and a fitting conclusion.
Strong thematic content raises this book from another “What if…” book to a moving story with some universal messages, and Addie’s journey leaves us in a wistful funk, like staring into a dark pool with a light breeze rippling our reflection. A recommended book – 4.6 out of 5.0 stars
