The Pillar Hike
The hike to the Pillar above Pillar Lake is short and steep. It is too far to drive as a destination, but it works well as a second outing if paddling Pillar Lake first. At the end of August I launched my kayak from the Pillar Lake Recreation Site and paddled the shoreline (5 km). I was just under an hour on the lake. After securing the boat, I climbed the bank to the road, then over to the trailhead to the Pillar.
The trail is steep, angling southeast then a switchback reverses direction and climbs north to the base of the pillar.
The Pillar stands alone among the trees on the hillside.
The pillar is about 90 feet tall and the cap rock is estimated to be about 8 tonnes. It was formed by the forces of erosion and will fall when the level of erosion can no longer support the weight above.
The hike each way is about 1 km and well worth a hike if you are already in the area.
