The Black Tower is a detective novel in the Inspector Dalgleish series (the 5th of 14).    P. D. James is one of the best crime fiction writers and all of her books feature careful craftsmanship of the plot, character development, and original stories.   I have read most of the books over the years.    I found this one to be slow and a little lackluster, though.   Dalgleish is recovering from leukemia so he decides to visit an old friend in a care home.    He arrives to find him recently dead from natural causes and as he stays to investigate a little more, there are two more suspicious deaths.    By the end of the story, he uncovers some dark secrets, as we come to expect.

Although all of her books are recommended, perhaps another one of the Dalgleish stories would be a better choice.
