Central Mountain Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-30 by D. Smith2025-10-16

We have been to Murtle Lake a few times and we have paddled the whole lake and have done some hikes from the lakeshore.    Between the North Arm and the West Arm is Central Mountain.   Steep slopes rise above both arms, but the top has open, rolling meadows and fine views.   From Leo Island I kayaked to the trailhead, just a sign on a rocky … Continue reading →

Stony Lake Track

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-24 by D. Smith2025-10-17

On a mid-October day I drove into the upper grasslands to the Lac d Bois Conservancy Area and hiked a loop route around Stony Lake.   The old double track was a cart track for homesteaders who grazed livestock on the rolling grasslands from 1890 to the present time.    It was called the 1000 acre lease, but changed hands a number of times.    There was … Continue reading →

A Stake Triple

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-18 by D. Smith2025-10-18

On an October morning, I chose to do three loops of paddling and hiking at Stake Lake.   Conditions were cool and cloudy at the start as I paddled around the lakeshore.    On the second loop, the skies cleared and the wind was lighter.    after paddling twice around the lake, I secured the kayak on the rack, then went out for a loop route on … Continue reading →

Bastion Mountain

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-14 by D. Smith2025-10-05

On a late spring day, we were camping at Herald Park and we decided to take a forest service road from Sunnybrae up Bastion Mountain.    The road was high-clearance for the first part, then 4WD for the rest.    We parked and hiked out to the viewpoint overlooking the Salmon Arm Bay on Shuswap Lake.    We then hiked over the top of the mountain … Continue reading →

Dufferin Ridge Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-05 by D. Smith2025-09-23

On the first day of fall, the day was sunny and windy, a good day for a hike on Dufferin Ridge.     From the main parking area I followed the Tower Trail (an access road for the towers) to the top of Mt. Dufferin, the site of a number of communications towers.    A single track trail continues along the top of the ridge and then … Continue reading →

Logan Lake Thrice

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-02 by D. Smith2025-09-19

Near the end of summer I drove to the Municipal Campground at Logan Lake.     I launched my kayak at the boat launch on the east end of the lake, then paddled around the lake twice, once in each direction.    Afterward, I secured the boat, then hiked around the lake on the Logan Lake Nature Trail. The lake was quiet.    A couple of small … Continue reading →

Whyte Bowl Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-25 by D. Smith2025-09-19

At the end of summer, the chairlift at Sun Peaks was still running so I rode the chair to mid-station to do a loop route on Tod Mountain.    After a summer of heat, the south-facing alpine slopes of the bowls and ridges were bone dry and the vegetation had more browns than greens.    I started the hike by climbing up through the Crystal Bowl … Continue reading →

Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi’ai

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-20 by D. Smith2025-09-13

The Kalalau Trail on the Island of Kauai is world-famous for the route along the cliffs of the Na’Pali Coast.     The trail starts at the end of the road on the north part of the island.     The trail is 11-12 miles one way from the trailhead at Ha’ena State Park to the campsite in the Kalalau Valley.    Permits are needed to camp at … Continue reading →

Clay Lake Loop

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-12 by D. Smith2025-09-05

On a sunny but smoky late summer day I drove up through the Lac du Bois Grasslands to the Nature Conservation Area in the upper grasslands and douglas fir forests south of McQueen Lake.    I hiked an old grasslands track, then took a grown-in single track around Clay Lake, then looped back through the forested slopes and grasslands. Clay Lake had low water levels from … Continue reading →

Outer Inks Loop

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-07 by D. Smith2025-09-02

On a hot summer day I drove up the Coquihalla Highway and turned at the Inks Lake Interchange.    I turned right onto the dirt road and parked at an open area on the right.    I have hiked the trails, tracks, and routes of the Outer Inks Trails many times.    There is a maze of tracks, mostly used by dirt bikes and ATVs in … Continue reading →
