Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver
Prodigal Summer is an incredibly rich narrative of a few people living in bottomlands/rural areas and forests in the Appalachian area. Three stories are told, taking turns, but eventually intertwining. The main characters have some disconnection with family, friends, neighbors, and their own past. At the same time, they are reconciling their connection to nature, finding a more balanced view and a more natural integration with their environment.
The narrative is compelling and rewarding. Some reviews are added here.
“A complex web of human and natural struggle and interdependency is analyzed with an invigorating mixture of intelligence and warmth.” Kirkus
“Notwithstanding its scientific rigor, Prodigal Summer remains a story of disarming simplicity and clarity, hinging on universal emotions and celebrating life in all its forms. Readers are thus invited to share Deanna’s simple prayer – “Thanks for this day, for all birds safe in their nests, for whatever this is, for life.” Hypercritic
“If you’re looking for a captivating and thought-provoking read, look no further than Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer. This novel explores the lives of three very different characters living in the Appalachian region of the United States. With its richly detailed setting, complex characters, and engaging plot, it’s no wonder that Prodigal Summer has become a beloved modern classic.” Bookreviews.com
