Bunker Road Trails
When conditions are marginal or time is short, it is nice to have some “go-to” trails for a shorter hike. These trails start just off McGill Road > Bunker Road, just past the recycling bins. There is lots of parking for this area on the northeast end of Kenna Cartwright Park. Many route combinations are possible. The trails can be hiked in either direction. I see both hikers, runners, and dog-walkers on the trails. I usually go around the outside loop, which takes about an hour.
On this last time, I hiked on the snow, using microspikes on my boots as it wound through a series of rocky hills. This was once part of the Department of Defense Lands. Some of the old naval ammunition bunkers are still there now, part of the City’s Works lands, to the west of the trails. Some of the old fencing with razorwire is still in place too, but there are gates open now for public access.
On the north end of the trails (on the TRU Connector Trail and the Panorama Trail) are views overlooking Rabbit Island, the Thompson River, and the North Shore. Views up the North Thompson River, up to the Batchelor Hills, and over to the hills and mountains to the northeast are there too. From the Panorama viewpoint, we can see past the airport to Tranquille and Kamloops Lake. The Bunker Road Trails provide is some the best viewpoints in the area.
These trails continue to be a “go-to” choice and I usually hike the trails once a month throughout the year. See you on the trails!
