High Bar Road
We have explored Marble Range Provincial Park quite a few times and we have camped at Big Bar Lake a few times too. Many of the days were out from Kamloops to hike one of the peaks as a day trip, but when we stayed at the Provincial Park Campsite on the lake, we explored backroads too, west to Big Bar Ferry, north to the lakes in the south Cariboo, and some backroads into the Edge Hills and the Marble Range. We had read about the High Bar Road which connects the Big Bar Ferry Road to the Edge Hills and the Jesmond Road. An article in Beautiful BC magazine described it as the most scenic drive in BC, so we drove the road, stopping along the way to explore and enjoy the views.

We drove a 4×4 truck but never used 4 wheel drive. The dirt/gravel road going south followed a benchland above the Fraser River, going past dry farms and through Indian Reserve lands. There were a number of old buildings and old vehicles and some grazing animals on open ranges. At the south end of the road, there was a very steep climb, zig-zagging up the slopes into the Edge Hills.
A sign at the top stated “Extremely Steep and Narrow Road – Not Recommended for Public Use.” The road had a 23% grade. We went up slowly over the top. We would never drive down this road.
A few images from our drive and explorations is shared here as a Google Photos album slideshow.
The album with captions can also be seen at this link – High Bar Road
The road is not maintained in winter and it would be very hazardous in early spring. Perhaps the safest option is to start at the Big Bar Ferry Road and go out and back?
