Lodgepole Snowshoe – Roots and Mikey
On a cool morning I snowshoed a route in the Lodgepole Lake area. It had been warm the day before then it went below zero overnight (-9 at the trailhead), so the snow was crunchy and hard, but okay for snowshoeing on stomped-in tracks. Since I know the trails quite well I went out with no particular route in mind, choosing a trail at each junction. From the campground I headed south, then turned down a narrow single track to the pond, which is part of Walloper Creek. A small sign on a tree called it Lily Pond.

The single track winds through thick forests with many downed trees, but the way had been cleared by volunteers.

I crossed the creek and followed the Homestead Track through a plantation, across an old branch road, then onto a motorcycle trail called Roots of All Evil. It follows the shore of another marshy pond. The Outdoor Club calls it Peach Lake (the route can be followed to Melba Lake farther south).

Continuing on the Homestead Trail (a half-fallen trapper’s cabin), I turned left at a junction to another motorcycle (GKMA) trail called Mikey Likes It.

Mikey Likes It is a very nice trail which winds through a plantation towards Lodgepole Lake. The final section winds through a lodgepole pine area back to the campground on Lodgepole Lake.

There will be more days of snowshoeing in the area. Over many years I have explored almost all of the trails, but I still use an app to help me when I need it (I use Maps.me), often to just confirm trail connections. For those who want to snowshoe the area, just follow stomped in routes, and if the route seems to be going the wrong way, retrace your steps, but with the help of a GPS-supported app, you can explore more trails on the edge of this backcountry area on the east side of Chuwhels Mountain.
