Copper Island

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-09 by D. Smith2025-10-09

On the first day of October I drove out to Shuswap Lake Provincial Park and parked at the boat launch.    I kayaked out onto Shuswap Lake with a loop around Copper Island in mind.   Last year in spring I had paddled to the east side of the lake, landed and secured the boat, then I hiked around the island before paddling back.  This time I … Continue reading →

Kayaking White Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-07 by D. Smith2025-10-02

At the end of summer I drove east toward Shuswap Lake, then turned onto the White Lake Road.    I drove past the paved section to the gravel road to White Lake Provincial Park.   There is a good boat launch and lots of parking.   Each time I kayak White Lake, I try to paddle a different part of the lake or to go in the reverse … Continue reading →

Dufferin Ridge Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-05 by D. Smith2025-09-23

On the first day of fall, the day was sunny and windy, a good day for a hike on Dufferin Ridge.     From the main parking area I followed the Tower Trail (an access road for the towers) to the top of Mt. Dufferin, the site of a number of communications towers.    A single track trail continues along the top of the ridge and then … Continue reading →

Logan Lake Thrice

Ramble On Posted on 2025-10-02 by D. Smith2025-09-19

Near the end of summer I drove to the Municipal Campground at Logan Lake.     I launched my kayak at the boat launch on the east end of the lake, then paddled around the lake twice, once in each direction.    Afterward, I secured the boat, then hiked around the lake on the Logan Lake Nature Trail. The lake was quiet.    A couple of small … Continue reading →

Kayaking Face Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-28 by D. Smith2025-09-28

On a hot summer morning I drove up the Paska Lake Road to Mile High Resort.     I checked in to the office and paid a launch fee (I do this every year), dropped off the kayak and parked in the visitors area.    I chose a weekday morning when there was no activity on the lake.    I went around the shoreline of the lake, … Continue reading →

Whyte Bowl Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-25 by D. Smith2025-09-19

At the end of summer, the chairlift at Sun Peaks was still running so I rode the chair to mid-station to do a loop route on Tod Mountain.    After a summer of heat, the south-facing alpine slopes of the bowls and ridges were bone dry and the vegetation had more browns than greens.    I started the hike by climbing up through the Crystal Bowl … Continue reading →

Paddle Battle

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-23 by D. Smith2025-09-16

On a late summer day, I hauled my kayak down the trail from the parking area for Cooney Bay to the rivershore.   Getting a longer kayak down to the beach is difficult with so many logs on the path and then mud down by the shoreline.    I would probably kayak Kamloops Lake more often, but limited access discourages more frequent access.    I paddled Kamloops … Continue reading →

Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi’ai

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-20 by D. Smith2025-09-13

The Kalalau Trail on the Island of Kauai is world-famous for the route along the cliffs of the Na’Pali Coast.     The trail starts at the end of the road on the north part of the island.     The trail is 11-12 miles one way from the trailhead at Ha’ena State Park to the campsite in the Kalalau Valley.    Permits are needed to camp at … Continue reading →

Kayaking Lac du Bois

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-17 by D. Smith2025-09-13

On a sunny end-of-August morning I drove up through the Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area to a parking area by Lac du Bois.     There is no boat launch, nor any easy lake access so I hauled the kayak over the fence and down to the shoreline for a narrow and awkward marshy spot to access the lake.    Using tall paddling boots or waders … Continue reading →

Kayaking Harper Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-09-15 by D. Smith2025-09-06

On a summer morning I drove up the bumpy Harper Lake Road to a small Rec Site on the northeast corner of the lake.   It was a weekend and the Rec Site was full so I parked off the road and hand launched my kayak into the lake. Harper Lake is located in the hills to the southwest of Chase.    Take the Chase Creek Road … Continue reading →
