East Rim 150

Ramble On Posted on 2025-12-02 by D. Smith2025-12-02

When I arrived in Kamloops in 1976, the first hikes I did were all in Peterson Creek.   The area was not a park at that time, but there were trails to the canyon from the lower end, and from Sahali.    Early on I explored up the canyon, following tracks along the rim.   I crossed the creek at various points and came back down the other side, staying close to the canyon rim on the east side.    The east side was seasonal grazing land, so I looked for routes that avoided cattle and barbed-wire fences.   In the years after, the area became a City Park and trails were better defined.   Users also went across to the east side and trails were unofficially established.   After many years going along those trails became more frequent and some trails along the rim were still unofficial, but well-used and some of the fencelines were moved higher up the hill and some gates were added.   Throughout the last  49 years, I have hiked a loop route along the rim on both sides.    In more recent years I have called one 4.2 km route the East Rim Trail.

Every year I hike the trail (in all 4 seasons), with an average of between 2 and 6 times a year.    This amounts to doing the hike over 150 times.   In 2025 I have done the hike 3 times so far.

On the last hike, the day was a bit grey and cool, so there were not many people out on the trails.    The trail was interesting, as always, and the big climb at the end was hard.

I try to go down to the viewpoint to Bridal Veil Falls each time.    Peterson Creek is only a trickle after a drought year.

I will be back on the trail over the winter again.    A YouTube (Short) of this hike is shared here:

Bridalveil Ice

Ramble On Posted on 2025-02-11 by D. Smith2025-02-10

When the temperature stays cold for weeks, all of Peterson Creek Gorge freezes over.    Water may run under the ice and may even flow openly in open areas, but in the narrow canyon by Bridalveil Falls, the entire route to the falls is ice, with some rocky areas to scramble across, but any progress to the falls will have to include hiking on the ice.  … Continue reading →
