Hiking Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes
We have paddled Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes and we have hiked the loop trails around the lakes. On our last hike on the trails at the end of summer, we hiked south around Kentucky Lake, then through the campground, to the west side of Alleyne Lake, then north around a series of lakes and back to the start. The north end goes through Douglas Lake Recreational sites which may be closed when the campsites are in use. In that case, hikers can go up and back on the west side to the gate and back.
The trail goes south from the parking area trailhead and follows the shoreline to the end of Kentucky Lake and back on the east side.
This was the end of the camping season so we went around the north end quietly and saw no one else.
Fall colors from deciduous trees, shrubs, and rushes filled in the areas below Fairweather Ridge to the west.
Our hike looped back around Alleyne Lake to the campground parking areas.
In prime times, the parking areas and campgrounds are full, so these are not the best time to hike the trails. Shoulder season is a better time to hike Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes.
