Beethoven’s 7th Symphony – Second Movement

Ramble On Posted on 2025-08-14 by D. Smith2025-08-14

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is close to perfect from start to finish.    I have listened to it many times and never tire of it. Included with this post is a short video of the Second Movement (Allegretto), a sad and beautiful piece marking the end of a catastrophic liberation battle near Leipzig, freeing the the country from Napoleon’s armies.    The piece was aired two months … Continue reading →

Ramble On Posted on 2025-07-28 by D. Smith2025-07-28

I have been a follower of the Moody Blues for over 50 years and had all the albums.    I  saw them 3 times live and would happily travel to see them again.    There are many, many fine songs, but I settled on this one to share:

Second Cup of Coffee

Ramble On Posted on 2025-07-21 by D. Smith2025-07-21

I have been singing this song for 5 decades.    It still feels fresh and I am always willing to sing along.   Over coffee, he reflects back over the years, regretting a lost love, and choices made along the way.     A familiar theme with memorable verses, now part of our lives too.

Tangled up in Blue

Ramble On Posted on 2025-07-14 by D. Smith2025-07-14

From Bob Dylan’s best album Blood on the Tracks is a song full of reminiscences of past relationships, combined into a song about loss, regret, hope, and personal choices.    The phrases of “Tangled Up in Blue” resonate with us for days after hearing it, and after listening, we sometimes reflect on our own personal experiences, our losses and happy times, regrets and happy memories.    … Continue reading →

Wish You Were Here

Ramble On Posted on 2025-06-25 by D. Smith2025-06-25

A long-time favorite is the song “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd, shared here as a Live Unplugged David Gilmour video. It was recorded in 1975 and was released as the title song of the album of the same name.     It was co-written by Gilmour and Roger Waters and is related to the lost band members, first Syd Barrett, then later Roger Waters. The … Continue reading →

Both Sides Now

Ramble On Posted on 2025-06-19 by D. Smith2025-06-19

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell is on my “all-time list”.    It was written in 1966 and was first covered by Judy Collins.    Joni included it on her 1969 album “Clouds.”    She has rerecorded it a number of times since and it has been covered by other artists many times. It is a song about maturing, understanding that we need to grow to … Continue reading →

That’s No Way to Say Goodbye

Ramble On Posted on 2025-06-15 by D. Smith2025-06-15

Leonard Cohen write Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye in 1966 and it was included on his album Songs of Leonard Cohen, released in 1967. He was a poet, an author, and a songwriter, and in his songs, the rhythms of poetry and emotional insights fill the song with melancholy, but also speaks to universal themes of love, loss, regret, and the inevitability of change. … Continue reading →
