Johnson Lake is a popular spot, known for its crystal-clear water.    It is fed by underground springs and there is a high mineral content, clarifying the lake water.  Access is on a long and bumpy backroad (Minnova FSR) from the Agate Bay Road.   There is a small BC Rec Site on the east end of the lake.    There is no parking there for day use, but there are some pullouts on the forest service road above.   The launch is a hand-launch only.

The forecast had been for calm conditions, but a strong wind blew in from the west so I pointed the bow of the kayak into the wind and paddled up the middle of the lake.

 

By the time I reached the west end of the lake, the wind was dying so I paddled down the south shore of the lake.    By the time I paddled around the bays in the southeast corner, there was little wind and the clear water sparkled under the boat.

Johnson Lake can be a busy spot in summer, but on this day in later September, there was only one RV at the campsite, and no one else on the lake.   I will be back next year at the end of summer.
