Barnes Lake Trails Hike

On a sunny and cool fall day I hiked a loop route on the Barnes Lake Trails.     From the Gardiner Road trailhead I hiked to the gate then onto Trail One, but for this day, I went off-trail up to the prominent hill above Barnhartvale Road.    I traversed over to the western hill, then worked my way down to Trail Two.   I passed Killdeer Pond, then went east toward Trail One.   Most of the loop was through grasslands hills or open ponderosa pine forests.    The upper areas (the Outside Loop) goes through douglas fir forest.    I explored various hills and dales, some off-trail.

Once back on Trail One, I continued back to the trailhead, finishing a loop of about 6.25 km.   Shared here are some photos taken while out on the hike, embedded in a Google Photos slideshow.    Click and image to go the album where captions can be seen.

At the start of March the trails at lower elevations in the Thompson River Valleys were mostly free of snow and mud.     One of the areas has multiple trails/routes off the end of McLeod – Uplands Roads in Barnhartvale.   Access starts from a small parking area to a gas line track which goes west below the steep slopes of Sunrise Mountain.    Single track trails … Continue reading →

Kayaking Scuitto Lake

Scuitto Lake is located in the Campbell Range area southeast of Kamloops and is accessed by the gravel Scuitto Lake Road from Barnhartvale.    The road continues on to Campbell Lake.    To launch a kayak onto Scuitto Lake we can use one of two boat launches on the north side of the lake.    There is a BC Rec Site nearby.    On this day, … Continue reading →
