Transition Time – Rivers Trail
At the end of February, winter starts to give way in Kamloops. The temperatures get milder, but the hills are still covered in snow. With milder days, but colder nights, the snow can turn to ice. More exposed slopes melt more quickly, but there is a period of muddy trails. We have to be selective in our choices. Routes in the bottom of the valley will dry out first and any route with a gravelly or sandy surface will drain and offer good hiking/walking conditions. We can hike the winter beaches, but we can also hike paved paths and gravel dikes. The Rivers Trail is one of the best choices for Transition Season hiking. On a cool and windy morning I hiked the Rivers Trail from the west end.
Although rain was forecast the day was cool, but very windy next to the floodlands near Tranquille.
For this day’s hike, I went out and back on the same trail. Upcoming will be a hike from the other end, going down to the West Beaches and back.
