Tullin Mountain Hike
We have traveled to the Chilcotin area a number of times, exploring trails, lakes, and various routes. On one of these trips, we drove from the Chilcotin Highway down the Chilko River Road to the north end of Chilko Lake (Tsilhqox Biny). Chilko Lake is 65 km long with the north end in the Chilcotin Plateau and the south end in the Coast Ranges with 10 000 foot glaciated peaks. There are no roads down the shores of Chilko Lake so we decided to hike to the top of Tullin Mountain in Ts’il?os Provincial Park to explore the area and get the views down the lake and across the rugged landscape. Gwe Da Ts’ih campground is a small, rustic campground at the end of the road. The trailhead for Tullin Mountain is there.

We hiked up to the top of the mountain, winding up through the forest to sub-alpine slopes. The hike climbs 870 m (2854 ft.), covering 14 km, and taking about 6 hours. We had lunch at the top and enjoyed the views. A faint trail does continue south for another 8 km one way and joins informal trails in the Potato Range between Chilko and Tatloyoko Lakes.
Some photos from the hike are included here in a Google Photos album, embedded in this post as a slideshow. Click the link to go the album and captions for the images.
This is a rugged and remote area so good preparation is important. An option would be to backpack over Tullin Mountain and camp in the Potato Range, coming down to Tatloyoko Lake, using a two-vehicle system.
