Kayaking Heffley Lake
On a mid-May morning I drove up the Heffley Creek to Sun Peaks Road, then turned down the gravel road to the boat launch area, just west of the Rec Site. With an early start I was the only boat in sight and there were no other vehicles (yet). With almost no wind I paddled out through the islands and into the main lake, staying on the south side, contouring into bays, then at the 3 km mark, I turned back down the middle of the lake.
The boat launch area has good parking and a wide gravel launch area. From the beach, the route out is in a sheltered bay with 3 islands. Boats are asked to respect a 15kph speed until out in the main lake.
Since most of the north side of the lake has homes on the water, I prefer to paddle the south shore down the lake. The paddle of the entire lake is about 11 km, but on this day I covered 5.25 km and saved some energy for a planned hike on the next day.
I prefer to paddle Heffley Lake at non-prime times and not in the busier season. I hope come back to paddle the west end in the fall.
