Lyons Lake Lope

Ramble On Posted on 2026-05-14 by D. Smith2026-05-06

On a warm and sunny morning I drove north to Heffley Creek then turned onto the Heffley – Sun Peaks Road.    At the waste disposal turn-off I went up the dirt road and parked.     I then hiked up the dusty and bumpy backroad to the Sullivan Valley and to the shores of Lyons Lake.   The hike was 6.1 km taking just under two hours.  … Continue reading →

Clay Lake Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-05-11 by D. Smith2026-05-05

The area north of Lac du Bois Grasslands Provincial Park is the Lac du Bois Grasslands Conservation Area, now owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada.   Hikers can hike old tracks through the upper grasslands and mixed forests on the south side of McQueen Lake.    An old double track which was once a wagon/cart track for homesteads is now a grassland route that can be … Continue reading →

Paddle and Hike at Stake Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2026-05-08 by D. Smith2026-05-08

At the start of May I drove up to Stake Lake to paddle the lake and hike the trails.   There are a number of lakes where this can be done, like McConnell Lake, Lac le Jeune, Paul Lake, Lodgepole Lake, Logan Lake, Heffley Lake, Tunkwa Lake, and others.   Usually I paddle first since winds arise by about 11:00.    I paddle around the lake once or … Continue reading →

Alexandra

We went down the Fraser Canyon for a hiking tour, hiking the Stein River in the morning, overnighting in Boston Bar, then stopping to hike the trail down to and across the Alexandra Bridge.    In the afternoon we drove to Hope then hiked the Thacker Mountain Trail. Yoho Whaleback – Iceline Loop

Ramble On Posted on 2026-04-24 by D. Smith2026-04-21

Our first hike in Yoho National Park was in 1981 and since then we have hiked many of the trails, including backpacks, ski touring, glacial tours, mountaineering, trail runs, and scrambles.    It is our favorite Rockies National Park and one we try to visit often.   One of the routes we have done many times is to hike up the Yoho river Trail past Laughing Falls, … Continue reading →

Sunnybrae Bluffs Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-04-22 by D. Smith2026-04-20
Sunnybrae

On a warm spring day we drove out the Sunnybrae – Canoe Point Road to hike two trail areas.    First, we started a hike at Sunnybrae Provincial Park.  A single track trail across the road climbs the hill, angling up onto the bluffs to a viewpoint.    The out-and-back route is about 3.1 km.  The trail had some fallen trees, some slippery areas, and is a … Continue reading →

Pat Lake Thrice

Ramble On Posted on 2026-04-13 by D. Smith2026-04-08

On a sunny day at the end of the first week of April, Pat Lake in the Six Mile Hills area was the destination for kayaking and hiking.   A bumpy road leaves the TransCanada Highway just west of Tobiano.    It climbs into the hills to the south side of Six Mile Hill.  This old road was once the main road between Savona and Kamloops, but … Continue reading →

North Vista Loop

Ramble On Posted on 2026-04-10 by D. Smith2026-04-05
North Vista

On a beautiful spring day I started a hike from the Pacific Way Trailhead, and hiked a series of trails up and over the shoulder of Mt. Dufferin in Kenna Cartwright Park.   The goal was to hike the North Vista Trail (from the Upper Doug Daws Trail), a scenic and rewarding trail with fine 270º views of the valleys, the hills above them, and distant peaks … Continue reading →

Cirque Peak Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-04-07 by D. Smith2026-04-07

On a hiking trip to the Rockies in fall, we camped at Lake Louise, then we hiked to the top of Mount Temple on the first day, and then to the summit of Cirque Peak on the second day.  The trail starts on the Jasper Banff Highway and winds up through the forest and alpine meadows to Helen Lake (6 km).   We have hiked the trail … Continue reading →
