Isobel Lake, in the Rain
On a rainy day in June, overcast skies and wet weather discouraged hiking or paddling outings in the hills, but if the winds are not a factor, another choice is to go to a smaller lake with a kayak to paddle for about an hour. To stay comfortable, a rain jacket is needed and a spray skirt (or equivalent) can keep the legs dry. Good paddling boots (neoprene) keep the feet warm even after wading into the water. The roads were muddy all the way to Isobel Lake. there were no campers at the Rec Site and no boats on the water while the conditions alternated between light showers and drizzle as I launched my kayak.
I paddled twice around the lake (4.5 km), once in each direction, going into all of the shallow bays and paddling around fallen trees.
There were two loons fishing on the lake, a mother duck and ducklings scuttled away, blackbirds and marsh wrens were vocal in the wetlands, and robins called from shoreline trees. No human voices, nor their machines were heard on a peaceful morning on the lake.
