Kayaking Barnes Lake (Ashcroft)
On a mid-May morning the wind forecasts were favorable for a drive west to Ashcroft. I went through the town and up the Logan Lake Road, then turned onto the Barnes Lake Road. At the far end of the lake is a Rec Site with a shallow boat launch. I unloaded my kayak and paddled around the lake.
There are several camping areas around the lake. The main Rec Site is at the northern end of the lake. The launch is a gravel track leading to a shallow, marshy area. Blackbirds greeted me as I loaded the kayak.
The lake lies between grassland hills on a benchland above the valley. Eagles swooped to catch a fish, then squabble over the meal. Blackbirds, killdeer, ducks, geese, loons, and magpies provided entertainment as I paddled steadily around the lakeshore.
It took about an hour to paddle around the lake, and this was enough for me for the morning, since I had a hike on the other side of Ashcroft planned. Barnes Lake is nice lake to paddle in the spring.
