Kayaking McConnell Lake
On a cool and breezy weekday morning I drove up the Lac le Jeune Road to McConnell Lake Provincial Park. I was the first boat on the lake as I launched my kayak to paddle around the lakeshore. I paddled once in a clockwise direction, then reversed it for the second loop for a 5.1 km route. One fishing boat was on the lake by my second loop, but otherwise the lake was quiet.
There were some ducks (mostly mallards) and geese on the lake and I could hear a woodpecker in the trees. There were hikers with dogs on the trails, but they were out of sight.
The forecast was for some weather to settle in by the afternoon and near the end of the paddle there were a few darker clouds coming from the southwest .
McConnell Lake is a good choice if there are winds. It sits in a bit of a bowl and half of the route is sheltered from the wind by forested hills. This can be a busy spot in prime times, but for early morning weekday outing, it was quiet and peaceful.
