Coal Hill Hike

Ramble On Posted on 2026-07-02 by D. Smith2026-06-30
Coal Hill

From the upper side of Aberdeen, we can hike tracks that wind up the hill toward the top of Coal Hill.    A number of tracks link to the Pineview Trail network.    Some of the tracks are remnants of mining routes and there are old digs and remains of a couple of cabins.   The grasslands above are pasture lands so hikers should avoid any areas where cattle are grazing.

On this last hike to the top of the hill, I hiked for 1.5 hours on an out-and-back route.     I saw some mountain bikers, but no other hikers.   There are several possible routes, but whichever way you choose, always go quietly, respect grazing rights, leaving nothing behind, except ephemeral footprints.

Shared here are some photos from the most recent hike up Coal Hill.

On a mid-May day it had rained in the morning so I waited for the afternoon to do a shorter local hike.    Although I had hiked Skyline Park once, I had not linked up the trails for a a loop route, with some out-and-back sections too.    I started at the trailhead at the east end of Aberdeen Drive, then followed the Buttercup Trail, then … Continue reading →
