Kayaking Heffley Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-20 by D. Smith2025-08-09
Heffley

On a mid-May morning I drove up the Heffley Creek to Sun Peaks Road, then turned down the gravel road to the boat launch area, just west of the Rec Site.   With an early start I was the only boat in sight and there were no other vehicles (yet).    With almost no wind I paddled out through the islands and into the main lake, staying … Continue reading →

Juniper Ridge Park (Scott Road)

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-18 by D. Smith2025-08-09

Hikers and mountain bikers have been using Scott Road as a route for decades.    It goes right around Rose Hill, but the entire circle route would cross private property, so we use one section of the track.    Hikers can hike from Rose Hill Road to the fenced end of Scott Road (about 4 km each way).    There are also some short side track … Continue reading →

Pass Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-15 by D. Smith2025-05-11

In early May I drove up the dusty Lac du Bois Road past McQueen Lake and continued northwest to the Pass Lake Recreation Site.    The one-lane road goes down to a campground and two boat launch areas.   At the farther one I parked the truck,  then used the gravel launch for the kayak.     I paddled around the lake twice, once in each direction, 5 … Continue reading →

Hiking Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-12 by D. Smith2025-08-09

We have paddled Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes and we have hiked the loop trails around the lakes.    On our last hike on the trails at the end of summer, we hiked south around Kentucky Lake, then through the campground, to the west side of Alleyne Lake, then north around a series of lakes and back to the start.    The north end goes through Douglas … Continue reading →

Above the Eagle’s Eyrie

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-08 by D. Smith2025-12-11

We knew where an eagle’s nest was in the Dewdrop Range so we ventured out across the sagebrush grasslands hills to a point on top of a hill to look down into the eyrie.     We hiked along the Dewdrop Trail, then went west on the benchlands to the top a bluff overlooking a deep gully.    In the gully is a tall snag with a … Continue reading →

Middle Grasslands Ramble

Ramble On Posted on 2025-05-04 by D. Smith2025-08-09

At the end of April we drove up the Lac du Bois Road to a trailhead into the middle grasslands.    the lower grasslands areas are open sagebrush areas, but as we climb higher into the hills, the sagebrush is less common and the slopes are mostly grasslands, with some shrubs and lots of pothole ponds.    There is a signed designated trailhead for a number … Continue reading →

Trapp Lake North

Ramble On Posted on 2025-04-30 by D. Smith2025-08-09

At the end of April the wind forecast for the area south of Kamloops was good so I drove south on Highway 5A to an informal launch on Trapp Lake.   I had earlier paddled south from the spot on the point and for this day the plan was to kayak the north end of the lake.   There was almost no wind when I launched as I … Continue reading →

Kayaking Nicola Lake North

Ramble On Posted on 2025-04-28 by D. Smith2025-04-27

On a sunny and calm morning. I drove south on Highway 5A down past a chain of lakes to the north end of Nicola Lake.    At a rest stop/boat launch below the highway I parked and unloaded my kayak and gear for a loop route around the north end of the lake.    This ended up being a 5.7 km route, taking about 80 minutes.  … Continue reading →

Hiking the Whiskey Dick Hills

Ramble On Posted on 2025-04-26 by D. Smith2025-10-18

We traveled to Central Washington State to hike the “desert lands” areas in spring.    We camped at State Parks and hiked a different trail each day.    We started with the Steamboat Rock hike, then did a loop route of hikes – Northrup Canyon, Lenore Caves, Umatilla Rock, Park Lake Canyon, Deep Lake, Gingko Petrified Forest, Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, the John Wayne Trail, Whiskey … Continue reading →

Kayaking Edith Lake

Ramble On Posted on 2025-04-20 by D. Smith2025-08-09

In mid-April the ice had cleared from most of the area’s lakes, except for the higher elevation sheltered locations.    I drove up to Edith Lake for the first time in 2025, then paddled the lake.    there were light winds at the start, but stronger winds came from the north for the second half of the time on the lake.   I paddled steadily for the … Continue reading →
