Elephant Hill Provincial Park
Elephant Hill Provincial Park is located west and northwest of the town of Ashcroft. The hills are in the sagebrush grasslands, but are difficult to access. The hills between Ashcroft/Thompson River and Highway are partly bordered by private property, grazing lands, and steep cliffs. The park extends to the east side of the Bonaparte River, but permission to cross grazing lands would be needed. We have hiked a route which combines rough double tracks and single tracks from the east side, using onto a turnoff from Highway 97C and parking out of the way. There are a number of old rough roads and motorcycle trails that climb the steep slopes up to the spine of the hills. From there a double track can be used to start the hike to the top of Elephant Hill.

We have usually timed the hike to coincide with the bitterroot (Lewisia redviva) bloom, roughly near the Victoria Day weekend. The return hike is about 8 km with some steep and rough sections. The hills may have ticks in the spring and there is a possibility of rattlesnakes in late spring and summer. Cactus dots the hillsides too so it is best to stay on the trails/tracks. From the top of the hill are wide views in every direction and the album provided shares some images from the hike, all taken by the author.
